"Suicide … are you a gatekeeper to prevention?"

Philip Van Guilder

Recent headlines in the media have brightened the spotlight on Suicide in our culture and new research data seems to indicate surprising trends regarding this issue.

When a person is at most risk for suicide is NOT when they are sitting with their counselor or doctor, but it is when they are in the community or workplace. This is why everyone needs to be a gatekeeper to help.

Everyone has a role to play in preventing suicidal behavior, especially EA professionals. You may come in contact with hundreds of people each day, for others just a few. Regardless of your relationship to others, if you think or suspect that someone is exhibiting behavior that may be a sign indicating they are thinking about suicide, you are in a position to help.

Who is at most risk?

What are the social and demographic characteristics more strongly associated with attempted and completed suicide?

What are the risk factors?

What are the Protective Factors?

How do we initiate the conversation?

During this meeting, Phil will address these questions and examine the key components based on the “ASK” suicide gatekeeper training program. Attendees will also learn important tips for a proactive action plan to best identify and help individuals contemplating suicidal behavior.
